My Shrinking Cephalotus follicularis

Greetings,
I know that the climate in the San Francisco Bay Area is suppose to be great for growing Cephalotus follicularis. I picked one up a couple years ago. I know that they go dormant and grow back during the spring. However, each year it's been essentially shrinking and not growing back to the original size of the previous years. Cannot anyone suggest a reason an a solution to my shrinking plant?

hi and a question

hey all, i'm new to tribe, and gardening with carnivores as well and i like what i see here. i have a few pitcher plants and four nepenthes that i've pretty much just been hoping for the best with so far. all the nepenthes are doing wonderfully, even the baby ones are flowering, however they didn't start flourishing until i was in a pinch and switched to tap water, which i was told i'm not supposed to use on these? so i guess my question is whether or not tap is really detrimental? as for the pitchers, they took a short stint of under-watering pretty hard and i just lost one today :( is there anything i can do to alleviate their stress aside from upping the humidity and keeping em wet now?

Hello,

I just received a Nepenthes Miranda (Hanging Pitcher Plant) as a gift. I already have a regular size Green Pitcher Plant and a Venus Fly-Trap that both do well, but I have no idea how to care for this new monster! It hangs, so I can't sit it in a bowl of water like the others. Could anyone give me some advice? Temperature, misting, watering, etc.??? Thanks!

PS- Please e-mail me.

Slim to none chance that any of you will be going through there, but on my way home from Costa Rica the other night, at the top of the escalator just after going through customs, is a huge, *fantastic* display of Nepenthes pitchers all done in bronze! No less than 20 of them including hamatas, bicals, raffs, lowiis, etc. Gorgeous! Unfortunately I was too bleary-eyed and in a hurry to catch my next plane to remember the name of the artist or even think of taking a picture, but if anyone happens to be through there, check it out!

NEXT MEETING: FEBRUARY 5

Title: "Pinguicula and Utricularia in the Cloud Forests of
Ecuador"
Speaker: Geoff Wong
Date: February 5, 2005
Time: Noon-4PM
Location: UC Botanical Garden, Berkeley

Ecuador! Nowhere else do such lofty mountain ranges cross
the equator.

Join us on an adventure through the Andean cloud forests,
illustrated by slides of dramatic scenery and exotic plants
including orchids, aroids, bromeliads, and, of course, CP. The
biodiversity in this small country is remarkable. We will
also get a glimpse of Ecuadorian life ranging from the capital
city to remote settlements accessible only by dirt road.

BRING A FRIEND!

by Stephen Davis

Bring a friend with you to the next meeting! Why?

1. It's a great place to see some new and interesting
plants.
2. It's fun to share your hobby.
3. Let your friend know that you are not the only
crackpot in the Bay Area.
4. They might meet someone THEY like.
5. The Berkeley Botanical garden is beautiful, and it
would be fun to look around before or after the
meeting with someone you like.
6. Save money, make them buy the gas.

I posted this on another tribe, but no bites so far...

Maybe you cuties can help!

Does anyone have any recommendations for getting my year-old pitcher plant to come back into flower? Currently it resides outdoors (I'm in Kansas City so it's plenty humid) in a mostly sunny spot. I have it in loose, fast draining soil mixed with sphagnum in a terracotta pot with a drain hole. It's growing plenty of new leaves and seems happy, but alas no flowers. Poo!

Any thoughts?

Hiya,

I got a pitcher plant and have had it for over a year now. Over the past year, all the pitchers have been slowly dying, and are now all gone. However, the plant itself seems to be flourishing. Is this normal? How can I get some of these myriad new leaves to form pitchers? Help!

Thanks,

Where's to buy....

I guess I'll start this list off with:

http://www.cobraplant.com/

And how about:

http://www.oudeanswillowcreeknursery.com/

And how could we forget the "FastFood-like" mainstream retailer of the CP industry:

http://gublers.com/Carnivores.htm

Anyone else like to share any places that they buy from?

cobra lily peril - help!

My cobra lily was doing so beautifully for such a long time. It got misted daily, and its soil was always wet. We had a heatwave here for a couple days though, and it dried up to the point of all its "heads" shriveling up (despite the misting and watering). I cut off all the dead heads and the heatwave has passed. Now the poor thing is left with only a couple ambitious new sprouts. I'm worried that this might happen again, before it's healthy enough to withstand such a thing.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Any recommendations as far as nursing it back to health?

Also, I heard a rumor that cobra lilies go into some sort of hibernation during the winter. Is there any truth to that?

Thanks!

So it sounds absurd to me, but has anyone heard of two species of carnivorous bromeliads? Someone mentioned it and I'm trying to figure out what they were talking about. Any ideas?

What do you mulch with?

I guess this question is aimed to folks in temperate areas who have carnivores that overwinter outdoors; in bog gardens and the like.
I'm in the Midwest and have a sizeable collection of Sarracenia, with some flytraps and sundews mixed in. Over the summer I installed a bog garden, added some plants, and when the weather got cold, I covered it with about 4-5 layers of burlap. It's been consistently cold, but hasn't dipped below 0 for very long, at least not yet. No idea yet how my plants will fare...I guess I'll find out in the spring.

Anyway, I'm wondering how other people mulch their bog gardens; what material, how deep, etc. Any recommendations?

My hearty lil Drosera...

I have a couple of Drosera that I rescued from an eventual dry death at my local Home Depot. I love home depot but god help them if they ever hire someone who not only knows a thing or two about CP's but actually takes the initiative to give them the proper care. It's bad enough that I live in humidless So Cal. Well anyway... These lil boogers were seconds away from drying out into oblivion and I saw there there and figured, "What the hell!" If anything, I'd be out about $10 if they didn't make it.... Well, shit on a brick if they didn't make it!!! All I did was hydrate the heel out of them immediately Then after a couple of days, I keep moist but not soaking, I put them in some bright and semi-direct morning sun and I keep them in their provided greenhouse container that they both came in. They survived the winter (I can't remember when I got them but it hasn't been too long) and now one of them seems to be sprouting babies (or from what it seems to me to be, I mean they look just like Mommy, just in a wee smaller version). They seem to be sprouting from the tips of the dew leaves... Are those babies? Well, Of course you could only imagine my excitement, right? So, my next question is... I really want to transplant them,( I've got the CP transplanting itch, I'm tellin ya now!) I live in Los Angeles, it's Summer, about 70-80 degrees in the day, 50-60 or so at night. Can I transplant them now? What do I do? How do I do it? What do I need? I know all about what kind of water to use and about not fertilizing them... Anyone want to help me on this one? I'll make you all Goddess Parents! Thanks, Greg :-)

I haven't seen it for sale for some years. Was it "wildcrafted" to death? Does anyone know of any companies raising crops of sundew for medicinal purposes?

Hi all!

Recently my cobra lily either died or went into hibernation, I'm not sure. But another plant in the pot has been flourishing. At first we thought it was part of the cobra lily, but now it seems to have taken on a life of its own. I've uploaded a photo to this tribe's site, and labeled it "mystery plant." Does anyone know what this plant is?

Cheers,

Secret of the Venus Fly Trap Revealed

http://www.newsisfree.com/iclick/i,69804919,1439,f/

January 27, 2005
Secret of the Venus Fly Trap Revealed

Taking just a tenth of a second, the snapping mechanism that a Venus fly trap uses to capture its prey is one of the fastest movements in the plant kingdom. Scientists have long wondered how the plant manages such a feat without muscles or nerves. The answer, according to results published today in the journal Nature, is by shapeshifting.
Yoel Forterre of Harvard University and his colleagues used high-speed video to catch the Venus fly trap in action. The researchers first painted the plant's leaves with ultraviolet fluorescent dots and then filmed them shutting under ultraviolet light. By analyzing the images and modeling the movement using a mathematical formula, the team reconstructed the geometry of the leaves as they closed. When trigger hairs on the leaves are disturbed, the plant moves moisture in the leaf in response. This, in turn, affects the leaf's curvature. "In essence, a leaf stretches until reaching a point of instability where it can no longer maintain the strain," explains study co-author Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan. "Like releasing a reversed plastic lid or part of a cut tennis ball, each leaf folds back in on itself, and in the process of returning to its original shape, ensnares the victim in the middle."

A better understanding of the Venus fly trap's impressive system could help researchers lean to emulate it. The team speculates that similar muscle-free movement could applied to valves or switches in microfluidic devices or sensors. --Sarah Graham

Window Boxes

Hello All-

I've been meaning to start my collection for awhile - at one point I had a small grouping of carn. plants, but moved and had to pass them along to others. Now that I'm firmly planted in the bay area and have the right windows for the job, I'm beginning research to see about starting some window boxes.

My general theory is that because I don't have screens in my windows, these plants will help me keep the insect inside my loft population down. I'm using the Savage Garden book as a guide. I haven't started the project, just considering it.

Anyone else doing this? Anyone have thoughts or suggestions or feeling like posting about it?

My main concern is that I'd like to have them outside, like your traditional window box filled with flowers. This means choosing plants that will survive the exterior. I'm assuming research will help me pick the right ones for the job. If this doesn't work, then I'll keep them on the inside ready and waiting for opening the windows in spring and summer. I have majority North & East exposure, so it's not intense sunlight.

may your gardens grow,
Violet

Purchasing live flies / etc.?

Anyone have any good resources on the web for purchasing live flies or other food stuffs for my little plants? Don't have a lot of them right now, just the usual flytrap and a bladderwort, (adding in a sundew this weekend, and currently building a much larger terrarium to hold pitcher plants) - but I keep them indoors in terrariums, and well, while going out and catching bugs can be interesting excersize (and boy, are there a lot around me) - I find that many of the bugs I can draw up from under rocks aren't particularly attracted to the flytraps, amongst other things (too big / too small, etc.). The bladderworts seem easy enough to feed, being so small, I just take some dirt from the potted plants outside - infested with fungus gnats - it's the bigger guys I'm concerned with.

Basically, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a place that one can order live flies (typical 'house' and 'fruit' kinds) online, so that I don't have to infest my house with them to get food in for the plants? (my terrariums all have fine mesh covers anyhow, so they wouldn't even make it in there... Mostly - I want to keep 'em from getting out =)

For those in the SF Bay area: The Bay Area Carnivorous Plant Society will be meeting at the UC Botanical Garden from 12-4 on 11/13. Sorry such short notice. I haven't been around much. Visit bacps.com for more info. Admission and membership is free. There will be some various seed for sale (mostly Sarracinia) and a slide presentation on Australian CPs (some never seen before). Sometimes folks bring in plants to sell, also.

Any suggestions on keeping my new plants alive and eating

We just moved into a new house that seems to have spiders, flies and some random ants and I hate bugs. I bought ant killer to get rid of them pronto, but also decided to buy a bunch of carnivorous plants. I bought 3 venus fly traps and 2 cobra lillies. So far the venus fly trap has caotured a spider (so cool to watch). But now I'm wondering, how long does it take for the plants to digest the bugs, and what can I do to keep them pretty, healthy and eating allthe bugs. I've already seen how the venus fly trap captures it's prey, but what about the C.L? They are beautiful, but I couldn't get it to eat a spider. What about repotting? One of the C.L. we bought has a lot of 'tubes' and doesn't look like it will belong before it needs repotting.
Any help, suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
help me identify this plant?

Cheers,

I thought that you all should at least see this trailer and then go and see it in the cinamas.

http://www.fahrenheit911.com/trailer/

I posted it in all my other tribes too...I have an idea? All of you should post it in a few of your tribes also.Help to spread the word...call your local cinema and make a request for it to be shown. I heard they are going to try and block it from being shown nationwide. It is not sceduled for release until the June 25th...this is our own kind of magical way to show our patriotism...”Viva la revolutione!!!”

The organization Moveon.org is trying to get groups out to view the film opening day (June 25th) or at least by opening weekend.

For those who have not heard-several Republican funded groups have started contacting theaters set to show the film trying to convince theater managers to not show it. Showing support of these theaters and this film would be a great boost to get the films message to the masses.
Even if you do not agree with what the film says, I'm sure you also do not agree with a politial party trying to dictate what films are available for you to choose to see or not either.

From the moveon website-
Given how devastating Michael Moore's new film Fahrenheit 9/11 is to President Bush's carefully crafted facade, it's hardly surprising that right-wing groups who call Moore a "domestic enemy" are using censorship and intimidation tactics to try to get it pulled from theaters. That's why we've got to do everything we can to make the opening a huge success. We're asking people to pledge to see the film on the opening night -- Friday, June 25th. (If you can only make it on Saturday or Sunday, that's OK too.)

There is also a link to register to say you will come out and support the film opening weekend. I'm not going to post the link here, since it seems to 'cookie' the info of the last person who typed anything in. Also it may open up your mail box to political mail correspondance.
If you want to sign the petition, visit www.moveon.org/pac/news/f911.html

In the wild

Where have you seen them growing in the wild?

On a camping trip in the Carolinas about six years ago, I was lucky enough to tag along on a ranger-led tour and saw venus flytraps in the wild in bloom. We also saw two different species of pitcher plants.

I've seenseveral species of pitcher plants outddors at "Garden in the Woods" in Framingham , Mass. Not wild, exactly, but outdoors in a wild-type setting.

And years ago, in the early 70's, I had a field trip with a very cool science teacher who took us to a quaking bog in Bethany, CT, where we saw sundew plants. I believe the boq was the property of Yale. It was surrounding by very muddy swamp. The bog itself, a former lake with moss grown in a thick layer over the top, was amazing. It was like walking on a gaint waterbed. The experience was magical and it seemed just the sort of place to find something as marvelous as a sundew.
